If you are a fan of 1980’s music, you may find yourself humming along to Olivia Newton Johns, number 1 hit “Physical”! Hundreds of older South Australians are doing more than just singing along – as Southern Cross Care has opened Health and Wellness Centres across 6 of its facilities with a further 9 expected to open in the next 12 months.
Designed to promote active ageing, the new centres support residential care customers in improving their overall mobility and strength, help to increase skills and support independence. Each of the new Health and Wellness Centres are fitted with a range of specialised exercise and rehabilitation equipment including recumbent bikes, seated elliptical trainers, handheld and strap on weights, balance boards, parallel bars and chi balls.
“Since coming to the gym I have regained my confidence with the support from Kirsten and the Physio staff,”says residential care customer Mary McDonald. “I am very grateful to Southern Cross Care for setting up the gym and I am sure everyone will benefit from using it.”
The Health and Wellness Centres are led by a team of Southern Cross Care Lifestyle Coordinators who have each completed their Certificate III in Fitness through the Australian Institute of Fitness. The centres will initially be open to all residential care customers, with future plans to expand the program to include home and respite care customers.
“Initial results have been nothing short of outstanding and demand from residents has far surpassed our expectations,” says Southern Cross Care Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Larpent. “We have been averaging more than 200 attendances per week across all 6 centres. Once residents see the positive impact of the recovery and exercise programs on their physical and mental health, they really become engaged with the process.”
Since 1968, Southern Cross Care has provided residential care, retirement living and home care to nearly 5000 older South Australians. For more information about Southern Cross Care or the Health and Wellness Centres please click here.
